General Motors (
GM) has confirmed two waves of layoffs that will begin November 18th, 2024 in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice first reported by Automotive News.
The company has said that this is a temporary situation whilst retooling its Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas, which will impact 1,695 employees over the next several months. The retooling is part of a planned program for electric vehicle production. See our comments on the business impact at the end of this subscriber only article.
The first phase of layoffs will affect 686 full-time employees temporarily, while 250 temporary workers will see their positions terminated completely. A second round is slated for Jan. 12, 2025, when an additional 759 full-time employees will be temporarily laid off.
