US: Inflation in line with Expectations

In what continues to be good news in the fight against inflation, the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics released Wednesday 14th August 2024 shows consumer price increases came in line with estimates during the month of July.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 0.2% in July, a rise from June's 0.1% decrease, driven by higher energy prices. This monthly price increase was in line with economists' expectations.

On an annual basis, the CPI rose by 2.9% in July, slightly below June's 3% increase and also lower than the anticipated 3% rise. This marks the lowest annual inflation rate since spring 2021.

Stocks are climbing this morning and yields falling with some calm returning to the markets as U.S. producer prices (PPI) increased less than expected in July as a rise in the cost of goods was tempered by cheaper services, indicating that inflation continued to moderate.

The Producer Price Index (PPI) for final demand rose by 0.1% in July, following an unrevised 0.2% increase in June, according to the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics on Tuesday 13th August 2024. Economists surveyed by Reuters had predicted a 0.2% rise in the PPI. Over the 12 months through July, the PPI grew by 2.2%, down from a 2.7% increase in June.

Copper: Zambia Closes Border With Congo

In a move that could affect copper production and hence prices, the Zambian government has reportedly closed all three functional borders leading to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as protests by that country’s citizens over the reported ban on beverages and lime by the Congolese government.

This is certainly a move that at a minimum could delay exports from Africa’s biggest copper producer. In 2023, Zambia produced 698,000 tons of copper and is the seventh-largest copper producer in the world and the second-largest in Africa, accounting for approximately 4 percent of global copper output.

US: Initial Jobless Claims Fall More than Forecast

In a positive development for the U.S. economy, initial unemployment insurance filings decreased more than anticipated last week. While this is encouraging news, we advise caution as similar patterns have preceded subsequent increases in the past (see graph below). Nevertheless, this decline provides some reassurance to markets concerned about further signs of deterioration in the U.S. labor market and the broader economy.

According to new data from the Department of Labor, there were 233,000 initial jobless claims filed in the week ending August 3, down from 250,000 the previous week and below the 240,000 economists had predicted. The week ending July 27 saw jobless claims reach their highest level since August 2023.
